Culture, People & Me – Working with Diverse People

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Interconnectedness of cultural competence and person-centeredness.
  2. How personal (implicit/unconscious) bias and culture can impact the way we engage with each other and  service recipients.
  3. Individual’s families’ cultural nuances that may affect their choices or engagement, to include, different traditions and customs that could affect care
  4. Cross-cultural communication


Adaptive Leadership: Thinking Beyond “Out of the Box”

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Differentiate between technical challenges and adaptive approaches
  2. Illuminate what Leaders can do when there is no “box”
  3. Introduce adaptive Leadership as a solution-focused and culturally responsive decision-making method


Organizational Cultural Competence and Health Literacy Self-Assessment

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Overview of Cultural Competence and Health Literacy
  2. Cultural Competence domains
  3. The need for and purpose of Self-Assessment process
  4. Self-Assessment components


Health Literacy, a Key Component to Providing Culturally Competent Services

Participants will be able to identify how health literacy impacts the delivery of patient services and health outcomes, as well as utilize strategies for improving patient understanding. 

 

Confronting Health Disparities

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Differentiate between equality and equity
  2. Inform participants' understanding of the historical, social, and systemic causes and results of inequities – racism and oppression
  3. Increase awareness that personal well-being is a human right that should be afforded to all
  4. Participants will explore personal approaches to achieve health equity


Cultural Groups: Messaging, Communication & Media

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Importance of two-way communication between providers and the service population, stakeholders, and the community
  2. Who are your population of focus?
    1. Some attributes of vulnerable cultural groups
  3. Some considerations - Communicating and engaging your population of focus
  4. Strategies for stigma reduction
 

Population Health: Keeping an Eye on Who We Serve

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Defining Population Health: Addressing Health Inequities & Disparities
  2. Develop a Common Understanding: Vulnerable Populations, Health Equity, Health Disparities, SDOH
  3. Who Do We Serve
  4. Utilizing Individuals’ and Community Data to Inform Service Delivery Enhancements


Poverty in Perspective

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Deeper understanding of the attributes and nuances of poverty
  2. The intersectionality & impact of poverty
  3. “Could You Survive...” Activity
  4. Implicit Bias and how this influence community/ consumer engagement and provider decisions
  5. What Can Providers Do?


SDOH - We Get Sick & Heal in Our Communities

Participants will explore the following:
  1. How SDOH - Social Determinants of Health influence and impact individuals’ health and well-being
  2. Incorporating SDOH to improve consumer/client/patient outcomes


Using Data: Get to Know Me to Better Serve Me

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Collecting the appropriate data to capture cultural and SDOH (Social Determinants of Health) information
  2. Analyzing the data to reveal the whole story
  3. ​Meaningful use of data to inform decision-making and improvements to achieve health equity


Outreach, Engagement and Retention: Consumer Cultural Activation Prompts (CAPs)

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Understand the importance to providers of learning about a consumer’s cultural identity and value system.
  2. Be introduced to cultural activation which is intended to promote consumer’s participation in the therapeutic process.
  3. Become familiar with the CAPs tool, for use by consumers, to present salient features of their culture that might influence care planning


Cultural Humility

Participants will explore the following:
  1. The definition, significance, benefits, and use of cultural humility as an approach to build trust and collaboration in cross-cultural situations 


Organizational & Team Culture

Participants will explore the following:
  1. Culture beats Strategy – defining the critical need to unpack and reveal the culture of the individuals that comprise the organization and the Team
  2. Our Brand – Asks how do you want others to see you and how to determine if this is in alignment with what others actually see
  3. Peering through a Cultural Lens: Incorporating the cultural aspects into organizational strategies and protocols
  4. The Equity Strategy – Need for and process of on-going evaluation and analysis of protocols and policies to identify any existing or potential disparate impact


How Structural Racism Works

Structural racism–the normalized and legitimized range of policies, practices, and attitudes that routinely produce cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color, especially black people–is the main driver of racial inequality in America today. This workshop will look on some of the drivers that propel structural racism - housing, education, wealth, criminal justice, and mass media.



Cultural Activation Prompts (CAPS)

Introduce a newly developed tool, Cultural Activation Prompts (CAPS) for use by consumers to help them present salient features of their culture that might influence the care process. There will also be a focus its intended use in the therapeutic encounter and on the relationship to health literacy and health activation.  



The Cultural Identity of Families

This workshop will explore how cultural identity influences their families’ experience as they engage with services and programs.

 

Racism, Prejudice and Discrimination

This workshop will focus on social determinants of health and its impact on equitable outcomes.
