The Kessler Center is looking for a passionate and creative Speech Pathologist who is interested in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder in a residential special education school.
The Kessler Center serves students with profound cognitive disabilities whose needs have not been met by district, BOCES, or private day school options. To accomplish this, The Kessler Center does “whatever it takes” giving our clinical staff complete freedom to be the experts, push-in to classrooms, pull-out for treatment, go into the community, co-treat with other clinical staff, attend volunteering and vocational placements with students, observe in the residences, support the families, coach staff, and basically be the experts in their field.
Our Speech Pathologists carry a small caseload (between 10 and 18 students) and follow the children’s needs throughout the entirety of their school and residential life by providing school-based IEP services and by training school and residential staff to implement supports such as visual schedules, picture based communication tools, assistive and augmentative communication devices, and therapeutic dialogue. Speech Pathologists are also encouraged to participate in our family training initiatives to help families learn the skills and strategies that are working at the school to increase carryover into the home setting and support family reintegration.
We look for candidates who have a desire to work with children that no other school could serve and to bring best-practices, creativity, innovation, and risk-taking into an amazingly supportive environment. This is a program that values the expertise of our staff, there are no top-down directives, there is only the expectation that staff are innovative, creative, passionate, and strong advocates for the students’ needs. If a staff says the child needs something, then that’s what we’ll do! No excuses, no delay, just meeting the child’s needs however we can!
Employment is full-time, 40 hours per week with accrued vacation/sick/personal days, medical, dental, and 403(b) matching retirement plans. Salary commensurate with experience and competitive with other school settings.
Licensed as a Speech and Language Pathologist in New York State.
